How Should I Store My Cannabis?
Proper storage keeps your cannabis fresh, potent, and flavorful for longer. Here's how to store each type of product.
Flower
Flower is the most storage-sensitive product. Keep it in an airtight container (glass jar is ideal) in a cool, dark place. Avoid direct sunlight, heat, and humidity — all three degrade THC and dry out the buds. Room temperature or slightly below is perfect. Don't store it in the fridge or freezer — the moisture and temperature fluctuations can damage trichomes.
Mason jars with rubber seals work exceptionally well for flower storage. They're inexpensive, reusable, and create an airtight seal that prevents moisture exchange. If you're storing multiple strains, label each jar with the strain name and date of purchase. This helps you keep track of freshness and ensures you use older flower first.
Edibles
Most edibles should go in the fridge, especially chocolates and baked goods. Miami heat can melt chocolates fast if left out. Gummies are more resilient but still benefit from cool storage. Always keep them in their original packaging or a sealed container.
Pay special attention to expiration dates on edibles — they contain regular food ingredients that can spoil. If an edible looks, smells, or tastes off, don't consume it. When storing gummies, make sure they're completely sealed or they can become sticky and lose shape in humid conditions.
Concentrates
Store concentrates in a cool, dark place. Keep them in their original container — most come in silicone or glass jars designed for the purpose. Avoid heat, which can change the consistency and degrade quality. A drawer or cabinet works fine.
Different concentrate types have slightly different needs. Shatter and wax can become too sticky if warm, while diamonds and sauce should stay cold to maintain their structure. If you notice your concentrate changing color or consistency significantly, that's a sign it's degrading. Store concentrates away from any heat sources like ovens or electronics that generate warmth.
Vapes
Vape cartridges and disposables should be stored upright in a cool spot. Don't leave them in a hot car or in direct sunlight — heat can cause leaking and degrade the oil. Room temperature is fine.
Storing vapes upright prevents oil from leaking into the mouthpiece or clogging the airflow. If you notice the oil has darkened significantly, it may have oxidized — still safe to use, but the flavor and potency may be affected. For best results, store unused cartridges in their original packaging until you're ready to use them.
Why Miami's Climate Matters
Miami's heat and humidity create unique storage challenges for cannabis products. The combination of high temperatures and moisture can accelerate degradation, promote mold growth on flower, and cause edibles to melt or spoil faster. This is why proper storage is even more critical here than in cooler, drier climates.
Consider investing in a small storage box or dedicated drawer in the coolest part of your home. Avoid storing products near windows, in garages, or anywhere that experiences temperature swings throughout the day. Air conditioning helps tremendously — just make sure products aren't stored directly near AC vents where condensation could form.
General Tips
- Keep products in their original sealed packaging until you're ready to use them
- Avoid storing in the bathroom — humidity is too high
- Keep out of direct sunlight
- Don't leave anything in your car in Miami heat
- Use humidity control packs for flower if storing long-term
- Store products away from children and pets in a secure location
- Check products regularly for signs of degradation or mold
How Long Does It Last?
Properly stored flower stays good for several months. Edibles have their own expiration dates (check the package). Concentrates and vape carts can last quite a while if stored correctly. When in doubt, buy what you'll use within a few weeks.
