How Do I Choose the Right Strain?

With so many strains out there, picking the right one can feel overwhelming. Here's a simple framework to help you choose.

Start With the Effect

The easiest way to narrow things down is to think about what you want to feel:

  • Relaxation / Sleep → look at indica strains
  • Energy / Creativity → look at sativa strains
  • A bit of both → look at hybrids

This isn't a hard rule — individual strains vary — but it's a solid starting point.

Think about your typical usage scenario. Are you planning to wind down after work? Consider indica-dominant strains that promote calm and help ease tension. Planning a creative project or social gathering? Sativa-leaning options tend to be more uplifting and energizing. For daily use where you need balance, hybrids offer versatility without tipping too far in either direction.

THC vs CBD Content

THC is what gets you high. Higher THC = stronger effects. If you're new or have a low tolerance, look for strains with moderate THC (15-20%).

CBD provides relaxation without the high. Some strains have a balanced THC:CBD ratio, which gives a milder, more controlled experience.

Experienced users who want stronger effects often gravitate toward strains with 25% THC or higher, but potency isn't everything. A well-balanced strain with moderate THC and good terpenes can provide a better overall experience than a high-THC strain with little else to offer. If you're sensitive to THC or prone to anxiety, CBD-rich strains help soften the psychoactive edge while still delivering therapeutic benefits.

Flavor & Aroma

Strains have different terpene profiles that affect taste and smell. Some are earthy, some fruity, some gassy, some sweet. Our product pages list flavor notes so you can pick something that appeals to you.

Terpenes don't just affect flavor — they also influence the overall experience. Limonene tends to be uplifting and citrusy. Myrcene is calming and musky. Pinene is sharp and energizing. If you've enjoyed certain strains in the past, check what terpenes they contain and look for similar profiles when you browse our menu. Matching terpenes often means matching effects.

Consider Your Tolerance and Experience Level

Your experience with cannabis plays a huge role in which strains will work best. If you're a first-time user or returning after a long break, your tolerance will be low — and that's perfectly fine. Starting with something too strong can lead to an uncomfortable experience that turns you off from trying again.

For beginners, we recommend strains in the 12-18% THC range. This gives you enough effect to understand what cannabis feels like without being overwhelming. Intermediate users who consume once or twice a week can handle 18-24% THC comfortably. Daily users with established tolerance can explore higher potency options, but even then, chasing the highest THC number isn't always the best strategy.

Time of Day Matters

When you plan to consume should influence your strain choice. Morning and daytime use calls for something that won't leave you glued to the couch — sativas and sativa-leaning hybrids work well here. Afternoon strains can be more balanced, giving you relaxation without sedation. Evening and nighttime use is when indicas shine, helping you decompress and transition into rest mode.

If you're using cannabis throughout the day, consider having different strains on hand for different times. A balanced hybrid for afternoon use and a relaxing indica for evening creates a rotation that matches your natural rhythm.

If You're New

Start with a hybrid or a lower-THC strain. Buy a small amount (3.5g) or a single pre-roll to test it out. You can always try something stronger next time. There's no rush.
